History

At Sampford Peverell C of E Primary School, we believe that history helps children to understand the world around them and develop a sense of their place within it. Through studying the past, pupils gain knowledge of significant events, people and societies, while developing the skills needed to think critically about how we know what happened and why it matters today.

Our History curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, encourage questioning and develop a love of learning about the past. Through carefully planned units of study, children explore local, British and world history, making meaningful links between different periods and developing an increasingly secure understanding of chronology.

The curriculum is built around four key threshold concepts which underpin historical understanding and provide a framework for progression throughout the school:

Investigate and Interpret the Past

Children learn that our understanding of history comes from interpreting the evidence that remains. They explore a range of sources and develop the skills to ask questions, draw conclusions and consider different viewpoints.

Build an Overview of World History

Children develop an appreciation of the characteristic features of different historical periods and understand how societies have changed over time. They learn that experiences in history differed for various groups of people and make comparisons across different eras and civilisations.

Understand Chronology

Children learn how to sequence events and periods of time, developing a secure understanding of the passing of time. They explore how events happened concurrently in different parts of the world and make connections between historical periods.

Communicate Historically

Children use historical vocabulary and a range of methods to communicate their knowledge and understanding. They learn to explain, discuss, debate and present historical information with increasing confidence and accuracy.
