Welcome to our English curriculum page! English is a subject at the heart of our learning across the curriculum as it encompasses the reading, writing, spelling and imagination skills we all need to thrive in life. Below is information you'll find useful in supporting your child in every aspect of their learning, particularly as it changes as they grow and learn. Reading and writing in the EYFS and beginning of KS1 focuses on phonics, which teaches the skills of how to recognise sounds and break down words into their sounds for both early reading and early writing. The scheme we use is RWI, supported by spelling elephants; these are an early introduction to spelling key words that are not decodable (tricky words). As the children progress in KS1 and KS1, they graduate from phonics to guided reading, where they begin to make sense of the texts they read through comprehension. The system we use to enhance this is Accelerated Reader, a brilliant piece of software that tailors skills development to your child's reading needs. Alongside all of this is a focus on imaginative, exciting writing opportunities developed by exploration of high-quality texts, which model the grammar, content and structure that our children seek to emulate!
Read Write Inc
RWI is the method we use to teach synthetic phonics from Reception to Year 1. It includes 59 separate graphemes, with phonemes (one letter, one sound), digraphs (two letters, one sound) and trigraphs (three letters, one sound). All of these are available with their matching rhyme on the document below. It is amazing how quickly the children pick up on the lingo and start to use these sounds to construct words and break down sentences! The pronounciation of these sounds is critical; please watch the video below to ensure you are pronouncing them correctly if you wish to support learning at home. While your child is learning synthetic phonics, they will also be coming home with short texts that match the colour banding they are learning in school in RWI. We recommend that your child reads them three times; once for decoding, once for fluency and once for comprehension. However, these should be supported with the shared reading and stories you do at home as well.

Spelling is a critical skill that we prioritise at Sampford Peverell. This is because it secures high-quality writing practices from an early age, as well as giving your child a fantastic vocabulary which they can utilise in writing securely. Our school has a rainbow spelling system for KS1 and KS1, the cards of which are below, and spelling elephants for EYFS learners. This system was designed by Miss Price and has been proven to produce excellent results. This relies on your child practising their spellings weekly at home before they are assessed regularly; the more practise, the better the outcome. Your class teacher will send your child home with the appropriate card and then they're ready to go! Please see the website link for the homework that will be set to support this; we use Spelling Shed which has plenty of games and tasks to do for spelling fun!
The Accelerated Reader system is a fantastic tool that revolutionises the reading children do inside and outside of school to accelerate their reading. It starts with a Star Reading assessment which the children do at school, which generates a ZPD; this is a score that indicates a range of book levels for the child to read. The beauty of this score is that it is a highly tailored launch pad for your child to select books that will enhance their specific reading skills. The process is aided by the child reading books and taking quizzes to assess their comprehension; our children love doing these and the library has never been busier!
